August 15th: When America’s Favorite Vacation Destination Takes a Vacation
Earlier this summer while we were planning a custom Italy trip our client informed us: “We will arrive on the 15th of August.” “Did you already plan your flight? If not, you might want to change the date.” was Isidoro’s immediate response. They were a bit puzzled. August is the perfect time for a vacation, no? Isidoro explained to our clients that August 15th is a national holiday and the beginning of the two weeks of Ferragosto in Italy.
Ferragosto has its origins in ancient Roman times. The term "Ferragosto" is derived from the Latin "Feriae Augusti," which were festivals held in honor of the Roman Emperor Augustus in the month of August. These festivals were characterized by various celebrations, games, and relaxation, providing a break for both citizens and slaves. Over time, the holiday evolved and absorbed elements from other cultural and religious traditions. Ferragosto became associated with the Catholic feast of the Assumption of Mary, which falls on August 15th. This religious connection contributed to the holiday's continued significance.
During the Middle Ages, Ferragosto maintained its festive and restful nature. It was a time for communities to come together, enjoy feasts, and take a break from their daily routines. As the years passed, Ferragosto further entrenched itself as a summer holiday in Italy, aligning with the country's agrarian history and the need for a collective pause during the hot months.
Today, Ferragosto holds the utmost significance as a summer highlight in Italy. It commemorates the midpoint of the Italian summer and serves as an unofficial kickoff for the nation's summer vacation period. Italy essentially enters a two-week hiatus until the onset of September, with many individuals embarking on journeys to the countryside, lakes, or the coastline, seeking respite from the sweltering heat. Because August 15th is observed as a national holiday, all government establishments, post offices, banks, and educational facilities remain closed. Given that the holiday coincides with the peak of the tourist season, most museums, tourist destinations, and cultural sites remain accessible on Ferragosto.
The end of August is not the most ideal time to visit Italy as so many people, including Italians are on vacation so everywhere is a bit more over-crowded and congested. Many shops and restaurants in the less touristic areas are closed. But Italy is a dream destination, so if the only time you can go is the end of August - - then go you must! And our clients who planned to arrive in Italy on August 15th? They had a time frame in which they needed to travel so, in spite of the fact that many of our service providers are on vacation, we shifted the dates. Then Isidoro worked some magic with our lovely colleagues in Italy, and we were able to plan a dream trip with all the Italian bells and whistles (and even a surprise 50th birthday cooking class with a fantastic chef) included.
Buon Ferragosto a tutti!
